Our program is designed to give you the hands-on training and experiential learning you need to be successful in the industry. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Learn by doing. You’ll engage in a 100-hour industry field placement in the sector of your choice that will provide you with practical experience, future career opportunities and invaluable industry connections.
  • You will develop leadership and practical skills needed to work in, manage and operate the accommodation, food & beverage, recreation & entertainment, transportation and travel services divisions of the hospitality and tourism industry.
  • Receive an optimum blend of hands-on experience, theory, field trips, and computer simulation exercises that prepare you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.

The Hospitality Program provided me with the skills I need to work internationally. As a recent graduate I already have a job at a hotel in Switzerland working in Guest Services!

We love seeing students enter the program with an idea of where they want to go, and then making it a reality for them.

Professionals and employers in the industry know that our graduates have received a thorough and comprehensive education, preparing them to work effectively as team players and as leaders. Our faculty are well-connected to industry leaders and those responsible for hiring our grads. Students are often hired for full-time roles directly from their field placement experiences.

As one of our students, you’ll have the ability to design your own learning when it comes to obtaining additional industry-specific certifications and practical workplace certifications. Employers favour applicants who have already completed this training:

  • Ontario Tourism Education Corporation’s (OTEC) Service Excellence Certification
  • Smart Serve Ontario Certification
  • Wine Council of Ontario Certification
  • Livingworks Education START Certification
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certification (WHMIS)

Note: there is an additional cost for these certifications.

During your studies, you’re given the opportunity to dive in and experience the industry for yourself. With the assistance of your program coordinator, you will arrange a 100-hour field placement. This will enhance both your employability and your educational experience as you network and meet potential employers. We recommend that you complete your placement between semester two and three.

You will be fully prepared as a hospitality business leader to step into key roles and make an impact on the guest experience as a customer-obsessed industry professional.

The career opportunities within this vibrant and global industry are unlimited. As a result of the comprehensive training we deliver, you will have many choices when it comes to career paths. This could include employment with national hotel chains or with local resorts, clubs, restaurants or banquet facilities. The airline and cruise ship industries also regularly hire our grads.

Our grads enter the workforce and advance to supervisory and management positions in a variety of functions including:

  • Housekeeping
  • Cruise lines
  • Recreation and Entertainment
  • Tourism Services

Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations graduates are eligible to apply to this program. Participants gain leadership, business, and customer service knowledge from seasoned professionals at Walt Disney World Resort.

  • Use your own personal computing device in and outside of the classroom. We recommend a laptop computer with the following minimum specifications: Windows 7 SPI or greater, 1GHz processor with SSE2 support, 2GHz RAM and at least 3GB of available disc space. Note that some required software programs are not supported on MAC OS.

Your program has two non-academic mandatory requirements. This includes completing your Smart Serve Certification, as well as completing the Mixology I certification before you enrol in your field placement course (FLPL225.) You will be able to complete both of these certifications during your HOSP3 course. Failure to complete or supply the appropriate documentation for any non-academic requirement by the specified deadline will result in denial of entry into the course, FLPL225 – Restaurant Operations II during the fourth semester of study.

There are a number of awards and bursaries available to students in the Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations program and it’s easy to apply. Registered students with an active timetable are encouraged to apply for all bursaries that are administered by the college though our single on-line bursary application.   • Support an industry and workplace service culture by adopting a positive attitude and professional decorum, accommodating diverse and special needs, and contributing as a team member.

  • Respond to issues and dilemmas arising in the delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences by using and promoting ethical behaviour and best practices of corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

Students applying to Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations must meet the following requirements:

Get ready to be inspired by Jennifer Rishor, the Program Coordinator of the Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations programs at Fleming College. With over 15 years of front-line and management experience in Food & Beverage, Front Office, Housekeeping, Guest Services, and Conference Services & Sales, Jennifer has made an impact on the hospitality industry in three different provinces. Her impressive list of positions includes Outlet Supervisor, Guest Services Manager, Manager on Duty, Conference Services Manager, Sales Manager, and Director of Sales & Marketing.

Jennifer's passion for teaching led her to Fleming College, where she has been lecturing in several School of Business courses and programs since 2009. Her most notable contributions to these programs include new course development and Ireland University pathway articulation agreements. Jennifer was also the recipient of the prestigious Charles E. Pascal Award for Excellence in Teaching, awarded by Fleming College in 2016. She is a shining example of how following your passion can lead to a fulfilling and successful career.
