Frequently Asked Questions about Living at Residence
- How do I apply to live in residence? Is there a deadline date?
- Each year there are more students who apply to live in residence for the September intake than there are rooms. If you are interested in living in residence it is important to follow the following steps after you receive your Provisional Acceptance to Fleming:
- Complete an On-line Residence Application Form
- Complete and submit the Residence Application Processing Fee Form (also found in your Welcome Package) along with the $50 processing fee (non-refundable after April 7, 2008).
- Deadline for application and processing fee for September 2008 intake is April 7, 2008.
- Residence application and processing fee for January 09 intake and other semesters is ongoing. Contact the Sutherland Residence or Frost Residence Office for information.
- Is there a deadline date to apply?
- Yes, there is a deadline date for the Fall intake and these dates are strictly adhered to. Do not send residence application fee to the OCAS Centre in Guelph. Please send residence payments directly to the residence office at the campus you are applying to. A residence lottery will be held soon after the application deadline date, for the fall semester.
- What if I apply after the deadline date?
- Your application will be waitlisted.
- When will my confirmation acceptance and room assignment be sent to me and when is move-in?
Students will be notified by the end of April by email as to whether or not they have been offered a room in residence. Students who have been accepted to residence will receive their room assignment notices by the middle of August.
Residence move-in for the fall semester is Sunday and Monday of Labour Day weekend.
- What if I have special accommodation needs?
- There are rooms designated for students with physical disabilities. If you have a physical disability, please indicate this on the application form.
- Where will I store my stuff?
- You will need to store everything except your bike in your room. Bike storage is located in a secure area of the residence.
- Can I have overnight guests in my room?
Yes, you need to complete an overnight guest form and have your suitemates and a residence staff member sign it. Your guest must carry a guest pass and sleep in your room (not in the living room).
Guests are limited to a maximum stay of three consecutive nights.
Please remember, you are responsible for your guests.
- Can I bring pets into residence?
- You may not bring any pet into residence with the exception of non-dangerous fish in an aquarium no larger than 30 litres.
- Do I have to share a room?
- No, all rooms are single occupancy but you share the common kitchen, living room, and bathrooms with five other people.
- How close is the residence to the campus?
- The residence is a three-minute walk to the campus.
- Is there parking available at the Residence?
Sutherland Residence Village
Residents who are bringing a vehicle to residence must purchase a parking permit. This permit includes a "smart card" which operates a gate into "R" lot. Residence parking is limited and permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Overnight parking is only permitted in this lot. Before arriving print, complete and return the parking application. After arriving parking permits can be purchased at the college Information Kiosk. Inform them you will be living in residence.
All guests of residents are required to pay $3.00 at the gate to gain access to "R" parking lot during the following hours: Monday 8:00 a.m. to Friday 3:00 p.m. Residents who require temporary parking (minimum one month) can purchase a short-term “smart card” from the Information Kiosk at a rate of $3.00 per day.

Frost Residence
Residents who are bringing a vehicle to the Frost Residence must purchase a parking permit. Residence parking is limited and permits will be issued on a first-come first-served basis. Overnight parking is only permitted in this lot. Print, complete and return the parking application before arriving. After arriving parking permits can be purchased at the cashier's office on campus. Inform them you will be living in residence.
All guests and residents temporarily in possession of a vehicle are required to purchase a short-term parking pass. Daily, weekly and monthly passes can be purchased at the residence office.

- How can I get involved in Residence Leadership?
- There are many activities that are run by your peers in residence. Students should enquire at the office about the many activities offered.
- What is provided in a residence room and what should I bring from home?
All residence rooms include curtains, carpeting, bed, desk with adjustable drawer unit, chair, dresser, closet and overhead light. All residence beds are twin size and you will need to supply sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets and comforters.
Included in the rent is cable in all the living rooms and bedrooms are wired for RezNet (access to email and Internet).
Hook-up and connection fees for phone (Sutherland Residence Village only).
A microwave, fridge, and stove are provided in every kitchen.
The living room and kitchen are furnished.
You may bring a small fridge or freezer for your room.
No extra furniture is allowed without prior consent from the residence manager.
- Are there any extra costs?
You will need money for food and other personal items.
You are responsible for the rental or purchase of a telephone and for any charges by Bell Canada (Frost Residence only).
If you wish to have cable in your bedroom, you are responsible for hook up and financial arrangements through Cogeco.
- What are Senior Resident Assistants and Resident Assistants?
- Senior Resident Assistants (SRA’s) and Resident Advisors (RA’s) are residence student staff that live with students on each floor. They are an excellent resource for services on and off campus. As well they will answer your questions, plan activities, and ensure that the privileges of residence life are enjoyed. The Director, Managers and Assistants work in the main residence office and are responsible for all aspects of residence life.
- May I select my own suitemates?
- When you apply online, you may select up to two preferred suitemates but the selection must be mutual.
- What should I do if I do not receive an acceptance to Residence?
- Visit Fleming’s Off-campus Housing Office.
