About the Convocation Ceremony
Please note the specific instructions that you will receive in your Graduate Package as each Campus Convocation may vary slightly.
- Student Arrival Time:
- You are expected to be at the Convocation site one hour prior to the ceremony, in order to pick up your gown and get ready for the Processional. There will be signs indicating where you will line up under the direction of your Program Co-ordinator.
- Protocol:
- The ceremony will start on time, and is expected to take approximately 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Protocol requires that graduates remain in their seats for the duration of the ceremony. Please respect your classmates who are waiting their turn to graduate.
- Dress:
- Business attire is recommended. For practical reasons, corsages should not be worn until after the ceremony and purses and flowers should be left with family or friends.
- Academic Regalia:
- Black graduate gowns are provided to each graduate. There is no charge for the use of the gown, however they must be returned immediately following the ceremony. Gowns are available at the reception for additional photos.
- Graduation Collars:
- Each graduate will receive a Graduation Collar during the Convocation ceremony. This is a keep-sake for each graduate. The colour of the collar coincides with the level of the Diploma/Certificate being awarded. The gold collar is for the post-diploma certificate programs; the three stripe gold and green collar is for the three year diploma programs; the two stripe gold and green collar is for the two year diploma programs and the green collar is for certificate programs of less than two years in duration.
- Photography:
- A photographer from Chappell Graduation Images (1-800-424-3686) will be taking pictures of each graduate (for Frost & Sutherland Graduations only). This is an excellent service at reasonable prices. Proofs are mailed within 5-7 days following the ceremony. Gowns will be available at the College after the ceremony to take pictures with family and friends.
- Graduate Portrait Photos:
- Are arranged by the Student Governments at Frost and Sutherland Campuses. There are gowns and collars available ($30.00 refundable deposit) in the Registrar's Office for students who arrange their own graduate portraits.
- Guests:
- Invitations are not necessary for the event. There is no limit to the number of guests you can invite. We would like you to share this day with family and friends. (Haliburton Graduates please RSVP as indicated in your package.)
- Reception:
- Frost Campus reception will be held in the Frost Campus Cafeteria and Student Centre. All Sutherland Campus receptions will be held in the Brealey Building of Sutherland Campus. Haliburton Graduates check your graduate information concerning reception location.
- Parking:
- Parking is free at all Convocation locations.
- Accessible Buildings:
- All facilities are wheelchair accessible. There is a designated area provided for guests with disabilities. Please ask a Marshall for assistance.

"Let the Deed Shaw"
In present day parlance, it means "Let the Deed Show" but nonetheless, the motto on the Fleming family crest remains true. Our College namesake, Sandford Fleming, arrived in Peterborough in 1845 at age 18. By applying his talents and knowledge, he helped shape this country and the world. His accomplishments include design of the first map of Peterborough and Canada's first postage stamp. A surveyor and planner of Canada's first railway, he also introduced Standard Time to the world.
Convocation is the most important event in the College year. It is a special time for our Board of Governors, our staff, and most importantly for our graduates, their family and friends.
