Program Highlights
Join the booming trades and construction industry where new workers are in high demand. Graduates have unlimited opportunities. Fleming College introduces a new two-semester Welding Techniques program that will provide graduates with employable skills to assist them in obtaining well-paying jobs in the welding trade. You will be introduced to numerous welding processes and will gain extensive hands-on experience on the four most demanding processed used in industry:
- SMAW (shielded metal arc welding)
- GMAW (gas metal arc welding)
- FCAW (flux core arc welding)
- GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding)
Basic blueprint reading, trade math, weld symbols, metallurgy, oxy-fuel and plasma cutting will also be covered. Upon successful completion of the Welding Techniques program, you will have the opportunity to do practical test plates in the flat position with the SMAW and MIG processes which are witnessed by a CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) test representative. If successful, you will be issued a Seeking Employment Certificate.

The welding trade demands an incredible variety of welding skills, spanning from fine precision welding of light exotic metals used in electronics, tooling, nuclear and aerospace, to manufacturing and custom consumer products, to heavy structural materials used in construction, building and bridge erection, pipelines and even ship and underwater welding. With high demand for skilled welders, your options are diverse and employment prospects are strong.
Minimum Admission Requirements
OSSD with any combination of (E), (C) or (U) courses or equivalent.
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.

Blueprint Reading for Welders
Course Number: CNST110
This course will introduce students to engineering blue prints, technical drawings, welding specifications, and welding symbols utilized to detail various weld requirements. Students will interpret simple joints, line types, weld types or cuts specified in a technical drawing and use this information to setup and perform welding details.

Human Relations

This course examines self-awareness, interpersonal relations, motivation, stress, small group dynamics, and organizational behaviour. Particular attention will be paid to leadership and conflict management in employment situations. Contemporary developments reshaping human relations will be introduced for study and discussion.

Trade Calculations and Layout
Course Number: MATH088
This course covers the basic mathematical principles and geometry skills as required by the learner entering a trade. Topics covered will include fractions, decimals, and the S.I. and imperial systems of measurement, including conversions between systems. Mensuration, Pythagorean Theorem and trade related problems will also be covered. The basic principles of geometry will include line-work, angles and triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, polygons, the ellipse and surface development.

Welding Fundamentals

This theoretical course will introduce students to basic welding theory, principles, processes, techniques and applications. Operating principles and safety procedures for welding processes and equipment will be studied.

Welding Processes and Practices I
Course Number: MECH180
This practical based course will provide opportunity to practice the fundamental processes of welding and cutting processes and applications, safe handling and use of potentially dangerous equipment, operating principles, and application of oxy-acetylene welding and cutting equipment. Correct operating techniques in fusion welding, brazing and cutting will be practiced.

Workplace Health and Safety

This course has been prepared for potential apprentices entering the construction trade. This course is designed to develop in the learner knowledge of the health hazards and safety risks that are present on the job site and to equip them with the tools required for personal protection and general safety. Upon completion of this course, the learner will have earned several required certificates for construction site employment.

Metallurgy, Electrodes and Consumables
Course Number: MECH182
This course will provide the non-metallurgist with basic knowledge of various metals, alloys, their properties and the classification system used to define them. Heating and cooling effects of various welding and fabrication processes on metal and alloys will be explored. Students will also be introduced to the various consumables and electrodes utilized in welding processes.

This course will provide the learner with an understanding of welding quality from a perspective of defect identification and reviewing cause, effect and corrective actions for various defects. This course builds on Welding Processes and Practices1 in providing students the opportunity to practice multiple welding processes and positions including the setup and application of various makes and types of welding machines. Included in this course are practical skills in Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding and All Positions Plate Welding.
