Program Highlights

 This exciting 8-month program is designed to teach you the skills and abilities to design, create and maintain websites and web applications with a focus on the front-end – the aesthetics or “look and feel” of the website. Virtually all companies, whether large corporations, small businesses, government agencies or non-profit organizations, have or need a presence on the Internet. The ability to create websites, to ensure that they are easy to navigate - and that they can readily be found through search engines -  is a critical asset to many businesses.
 
You will learn the fundamentals of consistent layout, client-side scripting, usability, markup and how to incorporate multimedia elements. In addition, you will have the flexibility to choose from several electives to hone your design skills, or choose elective courses with a programming focus.
 
Learn industry-standard development environments, tools, databases and languages. You will also develop an understanding of basic hardware, networking and operating systems, as well as the installation and configuration of web and e-mail servers.

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English. When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission, (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.

Mature Students  If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.

Graphics Theory and Applications

There are many software programs available for Web graphics development. Many of these programs can be learned more easily and utilized more fully with an understanding of visual/graphic design. Topics in this course will include the various types of graphics, the Web palette, colour reduction, file compression, and working with layers, formats and file sizes.

Introduction to HTML

Course Number: COMP403

The ability to create HTML documents from scratch and work within existing HTML documents is key to the Web development process and an asset to a Web development team. Students will learn how to use HTML and CSS to create a basic Web site. Through all levels of HTML and CSS learning, the student will learn about the various browser capabilities and reverse compatibility issues, and be required to cross browser test and troubleshoot their HTML and CSS code.

Mathematics Fundamentals

Course Number: MATH096

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills of basic mathematics. The topics covered will include calculator skills and the fundamental operations of mathematics with whole numbers, fractions, ratio and proportion, and percent. Students will use mathematics to solve a variety of applied problems.

Technical Communications

This course, designed specifically for students in technology-based programs, stresses the development of technical communication as it applies to workplace and academic needs. Students will prepare a variety of technical documents and in the process learn to apply standard rules of usage. Key applications include lab reports, proposals, research reports, documenting sources, editing and proofreading strategies, and spoken presentations.

Web Interface Design Principles

Proper interface design is critical to the success of a web site. In this course, students will learn about the design principles used in the planning and development of an intuitive, usable web interface. Advanced HTML

HTML, XHTML and Dynamic HTML provide powerful tools for developing advanced functionality within a web site. Understanding core elements from scratch will provide the developer with the foundation for ongoing development and advancement in the workplace. Advanced css styling will be taught and javascript introduced with a goal of web standards compliance.

E-Portfolio for Internet Projects

Course Number: BUSN119

This portfolio project is intended to incorporate and demonstrate the student's skills and knowledge of Web Development in their final semester. Students will research examples of e-portfolios and establish their e-portfolio presence on the World Wide Web. They will research and establish their own domain name. Employing their skills in web design, students will complete the design and content of their e-portfolio web site. The web site will be required to reflect current web standards as defined by the W3C.

Multimedia Web Development (Flash)

Course Number: COMP111

This course is designed to build basic technical competencies in the appropriate use of multimedia for business, commerce and educational applications. The course examines the various file types in current use including audio, video, movie and Flash files: online playback systems: browser plug-ins: and the preparation/optimization of multimedia for Web delivery. Although the course focuses on the technical aspects of multimedia, students will be encouraged to parallel their learning through assessment of the design and use of multimedia applications in various contexts (business, commerce, education).

Web Usability Design

Creating content for the Web requires specific communication and presentation skills. This course will cover how to plan and create content for on-screen viewing, including descriptive information, instructions, forms, transaction messages, and error pages. In addition, writing for an international audience, creating web pages that are accessible, and ensuring copyright compliance will be discussed.

This course is designed to develop an understanding of planning the start-up of a business, its ongoing management and strategies for growth. Students learn about the legal forms of business ownership, the importance of financial analysis as a success indicator for the business and appropriate marketing tactics for promoting small business. The student will develop an actual business plan for their own business idea.
