Program Highlights

Employment prospects are strong for people trained as qualified estheticians as more people are seeking treatments to maintain a youthful appearance, reduce stress and improve health and wellness. In this program, you will learn how to provide a range of esthetic treatments, such as manicures and pedicures, make-up, skin care, body treatments and waxing techniques. You will also learn how to work in a professional manner with clients and co-workers, understand customer service and business essentials. The program is designed so that you will study during daytime courses in three consecutive semesters, beginning in September and graduating in August. You obtain increasing hands-on experience in each semester. In semesters two and three, you will provide esthetic services to clients in the college's on-site, fully equipped spa/salon. In just three semesters, you can graduate with a recognized Ontario College Diploma, ready to take on job opportunities in a salon, spa, resort, clinic, hotel, or consider starting your own business.

Career Opportunities

The demand for qualified estheticians is high and expected to continue to grow. Career opportunities include working in large or small businesses, salons, spas, resorts, hotels, cosmetic areas of department stores, health centres and clinics. With experience, you may choose to open your own business. This industry is growing at an average rate of 20% annually, with the greatest market increase in Ontario. In addition to work as an esthetician, you may also find employment as a product trainer, demonstrator or as a sales representative for cosmetic products. With additional training, you can also advance to become a salon or spa manager.

 

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English.

When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission, (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.

Mature Students
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.

Business Essentials - A Survival Course

Course Number: BUSN002

This course will explore the nature of business and the role of the individual within the business context. The course will help to prepare the student for the world of business by developing an understanding of the major functional aspects of a successful business. The course will also focus on a number of important business trends that will continue to affect business into the future. These include the growth and influence of international business, the role of ethics and social responsibility in business decisions, the significance of small business, the growth of the service sector, and the influence of technology on business activities. This is an approved general education course.

Communications for Community Development & Health

Course Number: COMM079

Communications for CD&H, a mandatory Communications course, focuses on improving reading and writing skills through a number of assignments related to the helping professions. Students will demonstrate skills in summary and essay writing as well as research techniques, including appropriate documentation of sources. The principles of style, structure, content, and mechanics constitute the overall framework of the course.

Hair Removal

This is an introductory course in hair removal. Topics include a comprehensive study of the structure and anatomy of hair growth and hair removal techniques used today in modern salons. The basics of chemistry are also explained. During the course, students learn the most up to date waxing methods, proper care, operation and safety of waxing equipment, facial and eye shape techniques and proper hygiene.

Introductory Computing

Working in the Windows XP environment, this computer course introduces the student to computer basics (computer terminology, e-mail, Internet, file management) and the application and use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Through the extensive use of hands-on activities, students will gain sufficient knowledge and experience to make productive use of computers as a tool in both college and workplace environments.

Manicure Level I

Course Number: COSM003

Manicures are one of the most requested services in the salon industry. A sound knowledge of this basic service and how it relates to other esthetic services will provide students with a solid learning foundation. The condition of the nail, like that of the skin, reflects the general health of the body.

Pedicure Level I

As one of the most requested services in the esthetics industry, students learn how to provide clients with a professional pedicure and apply cosmetic lotions to feet and legs to improve circulation and provide relaxation. Study of nail and foot disorders will be provided, along with esthetic treatments that can be used. Appropriate sanitation of the salon equipment is also a key outcome in this course.

Practical Salon/Spa Experience I

Course Number: FLPL104

Students will practice introductory esthetic techniques on class members within a College spa/salon setting. In later semesters, the students will provide esthetic services to the public. This practical experience reinforces skills and knowledge gained in class. The esthetics salon/spa prepares students for future jobs in the esthetic field where punctuality, cleanliness, and professionalism are highly valued.

Students will be introduced to the daily activities of an esthetics business and will actively participate in all tasks involved in day-to-day operations. They will be responsible for booking appointments, performing services (learned in this semester), cleaning, and managing all aspects of an esthetic business.

Introductory Human Biology

This course will outline the basic functions of the human body in the context of esthetic treatment. Topics will include human biological, physiological and anatomical systems. The makeup artist provides a valuable service to clients who want to learn to apply makeup artistically. Skin Care Level II

Course Number: COSM002

The student will use advanced techniques in facial treatments (including various deep-cleansing methods) and operate skin/ esthetics equipment (facial steamer, brushing machine, high frequency), and manual extraction. Students will study the muscles of the face and neck for the purpose of skin treatments. They will learn advanced skin treatment techniques, masque therapies, and product applications enabling them to perform and adjust facials for clients and to meet industry expectations. The chemistry and application of various product lines will be studied as well.

Towards Optimum Health

Course Number: GNED052

This course will provide students with the tools they need to achieve and maintain optimum health and longevity. The emphasis will be on avoidance of chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke, cancer and diabetes through sound nutrition and therapeutic supplementation. Healthy living techniques such as exercise, stress management and the power of positive thinking will also be covered. Each student will develop a healthy eating plan as well as a personal fitness and stress management plan.
