So...you want to get into a college or apprenticeship program - but you didn't finish high school?
Or you have your diploma, but you don't have some of the prerequisites for the program that you'd like to apply for? Maybe you've been stuck in a dead-end job for a while now and want something better for your career, but you need your "Grade 12 Equivalency" to even be considered for promotion.
Don't let these obstacles stop you! Overcome them and excel - with the support and instruction of Fleming College's Academic Upgrading team.
Fleming offers Academic Upgrading services at all of our campuses -in Cobourg, Haliburton, Peterborough (Sutherland Campus), and Lindsay (Frost Campus) - there's bound to be a program near you.
Now, you can apply your Academic Upgrading courses to obtain the new Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate in recognition of your studies. This certificate program provides the equivalent of Grade 12 for college access and meets the admission criteria as an equivalency to Grade 12 for apprenticeship programs. See the information under the Program Curriculum tab above for ACE course requirements.
What we offer
We offer a flexible, customized program designed to meet your needs and educational goals.
Call us, and we'll prepare you for an assessment that will help us determine your present level in reading, writing, and mathematics. Then, based upon your goals, we will develop a plan outlining what you need to do and how long it will take.
Rather than tell you what to do, we will work with you to develop your learning plan. If you want to earn an equivalency to Grade 12, we'll provide the communications (English language skills), mathematics, and computer skills you need. If you just need one or two credits in sciences, such as biology and chemistry - then that's what you'll get.
Your learning is self-paced - that means you decide how quickly or slowly you'll do the work. You'll set your own deadlines with your academic advisor - and adjust them, if your plans change.
And, depending on your situation, you might be able to take some post secondary college courses while you do your academic upgrading - ask your advisor about this option.
Start your educational journey anytime.
You can start your academic upgrading any time, year-round. Schedule your classroom hours around your work and family responsibilities. Attend either full or part-time, day or evening (as available).
What will it cost?
Lack of money shouldn't stop you from attending - the program is free to most people. The Government of Ontario (LBS Program) or other agencies such as the Workers' Safety and Insurance Board will pay your tuition.
Plus, we can provide financial help for transportation and child-care expenses, for those who need it and qualify.
Help! I didn't do so well last time in the classroom.
Does the idea of sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher lecture give you the willies? Never fear. We know people learn in different ways. You will be working either independently or in a non-traditional classroom, along with other adult learners, with a teacher always ready to provide the support you need. Regardless of your past experience, we're here to say YOU CAN SUCCEED. You can do it - and we'll be behind you 110 per cent with real support. Career and educational counselling, time management tips, and goal setting are just a few of our services. And once you've finished your upgrading, we'll help you with applications to college, apprenticeship programs, or jobs.
You're not alone
Believe it or not, there are lots of other people out there who are "in the same boat" as you. You'll meet some of them during your time with us. What's great is that you may find yourself developing good friendships as well as a support network amongst other "academic upgraders". You'll find that working and studying with adults - not children or teenagers - can be a very positive experience.
What you need to succeed
First and foremost, you need to be self-motivated. You have to decide that you want something better for yourself, and then we'll work with you to get it.
So what can I do when I'm done?
By the time you've completed your studies in the Academic Upgrading program, you will be prepared to reach your goals - be they further education, training, or a new career.
Even if you decide not to pursue new career directions or a post-secondary education program, you will have acquired a new confidence and ability to learn - which will serve you well wherever you go, and in whatever you do.
